Intraspecific variation in diel patterns of rocky reef use suggests temporal partitioning in Port Jackson sharks

نویسندگان

چکیده

Limited information exists about the temporal residency patterns of marine predators, especially at individual level. Temporal partitioning resources can reduce intra-specific competition, but this has seldom been examined in predators ecosystems. Here, we used 8 years acoustic telemetry data from 27 receivers deployed a large coastal embayment to examine 51 Port Jackson sharks (Heterodontus portusjacksoni), during their breeding season. We found that lengths male and female on reefs differed throughout season, with males showing longer start season females end also showed 24-h or diel periodicity detection patterns. Although majority individuals were nocturnal, small proportion was detected more frequently day, possibly competition for resources. Surprisingly, there no difference sex ratio nor size diurnal nocturnal individuals. This study provides long-term insight into mesopredatory site and, broadly, our results highlight importance studying variation level movement ecology studies.

Use of an acceleration data logger to measure diel activity patterns in captive whitetip reef sharks, Triaenodon obesus

Traditional telemetry methods have been used to quantify the horizontal and vertical displacement of marine species, but are unable to identify specific physical activities such as swimming or gliding, resting, foraging, or spawning. We tested the utility of an acceleration data logger to quantify activity patterns of three captive whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) in an enclosed lagoon ...

Deep-diving and diel changes in vertical habitat use by Caribbean reef sharks Carcharhinus perezi

Longline sampling (83 sets) supplemented with 6 pop-off archival transmitting (PAT) tag deployments were used to characterize vertical habitat use by Caribbean reef sharks Carcharhinus perezi at Glover’s Reef atoll, Belize. Longline catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) in 2 shallow reef habitats (lagoon <18 m depth, fore-reef <40 m depth) underwent significant nocturnal increases for sharks larger than...

Temporal Variation in Rocky Intertidal Gastropods of the Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf

Gastropod assemblages were investigated along intertidal rocky shore in the Qeshm Island in the northern Persian Gulf. Monthly sampling was undertaken from May 2007 to April 2008. Environmental factors were also measured in each site. A total of 28 gastropod taxa belonging to 15 families were identified and Cerithiidae was the most abundant family and Cerithium caeruleum was the most abundant...

Intraspecific variation in vertical habitat use by tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) in the western North Atlantic

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are a wide ranging, potentially keystone predator species that display a variety of horizontal movement patterns, making use of coastal and pelagic waters. Far less, however, is known about their vertical movements and use of the water column. We used pop-up satellite archival tags with two data sampling rates (high rate and standard rate tags) to investigate th...
